Anything can affect the respondent, the clothing of the interviewer to the wording of the questions.
Because a survey is usually not taken orally through an interview, is especially important to the formulation. When setting up your questions on the following:
- Avoid jargon and technical terms.
- Use clear descriptions and avoid ambiguous words and concepts such as 'often', 'usually', 'innovative' or 'dynamic'.
- Keep the questions simple.
- Avoid questions about more than one topic, like "Are you Dutch parents?"
- Use words like "whole" or "over half" rather than percentages or proportions.
- Avoid questions with double negatives.
- Do not use leading questions, but remains neutral.
- Take into account the context in which the questions are asked.
- Be careful with sensitive issues. This may arouse opposition and scare your survey respondents to complete.
The purpose of your survey is to obtain information from respondents. This information can be divided into three categories: background information about the behavior and opinions of the interviewee. Because some topics are sensitive or prone to "socially desirable answers" is important on these types of good questions to consider.
